In honor of National Safe Boating Week, the Sea Tow Foundation offers the following five tips for staying safe on the water this summer. Learn more about the Sea Tow Foundation at www.boatingsafety.com.

1. Wear a life jacket: Life jackets save lives, but only if you wear them. New options such as inflatable belt packs and vests make life jackets cool and comfortable. Wear one at all times while on or near the water. Children under the age of 13 are required to wear life jackets while boating.
2. Designate a sober skipper: Boat operators need to be clear-headed and able to make quick decisions while on the water. Drinking alcohol or taking drugs – including some over-the-counter or prescription medicines – decreases reaction time and the ability to think clearly.
3. Carry a VHF Radio: While many boaters rely on cell phones, they can be unreliable on the water where coverage is often spotty or nonexistent. A VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of equipment on your boat because it allows you to broadcast a call for help to anyone in your area monitoring Channel 16. Before taking your boat out, be sure to perform a radio check to ensure your VHF is operational. In many regions across the country, you can do this via our free Sea Tow Automated Radio Check service. Simply tune to VHF Channel 24-28 (channel varies by area) to check the tone, quality and strength of your radio transmission without having to rely on anyone else. To find the VHF channel for a radio check in your area, click here.
4. Get a vessel safety check: The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadrons both offer free Vessel Safety Checks to get boaters ready for the season. They’ll help make sure that you are carrying everything you need from an anchor to a fire extinguisher so you are safe and legal on the water.
5. Take a boating safety course: These informative classes offer something for everyone, even if you’re an experienced boater. With constantly changing requirements and regulations, it’s important to make sure you are up to date when it comes to boating safety. Plus, boaters who complete a course may be eligible for a discount on their boat owner’s insurance. A list of all approved boating safety courses offered nationwide can be found at www.nasbla.net/courseListing.php.

A long time ago in a prior life, I discovered that my lips don’t like being outside and in the sun nearly as much as I do! I struggled using first one lip balm product and then another. None seemed to last. Then I wandered into a snow ski shop, don’t ask what a cruiser…

How exciting is this! Imagine being out cruising for the last couple of months, finally getting a chance to “plug in” and finding out that McGraw Hill/International Marine has decided that there’s just too much good stuff in our The Boat Galley Cookbook to cut the page count. So they’ve increased the pages by 33%…

Warderick Wells, the headquarters of the Exumas Land & Sea Park (a Bahamas national park) is a spectacular blend of underwater coral gardens, colorful reef fish, some scary sharks, 1700’s Loyalist settlement ruins, hiking on rocky bluffs overlooking watercolors in all shades of inky blue, teal, aqua, clear green, and white. Waves crashing on the…

So I’m waiting for my washers to finish so I can claim a dryer in the Marathon City Dock laundry room, listening to other cruisers discuss what we all discuss all the time … weather. Not an uplifting topic for those of us waiting on a window to go north and confronted with cold front…

A very sad day for the Winterluders. In about an hour, we’ll let go of our mooring J4 in Boot Key Harbor, Marathon, sail under the 7 Mile Bridge and sail north, heading in the general direction of “home” for the boat. It’s almost time to start preparing Winterlude for hurricane season. But in the…

I love living aboard our almost 30 year old Passport 37 sailboat! We can relocate our backyard, move into a new neighborhood or even move to paradise any time we want to untie the dock lines. It’s a lifestyle that fits my never-ending curiosity and allows us to walk on distant beaches that few see…

Some days while cruising are just perfection … they easily offset the days that are more challenging and yesterday was one of the days we dreamed about before we left to go cruising over 10 years ago! Monday we completed our loop to the Exumas (Bahamas) by sailing back to Marathon in the Florida Keys. …

We’re back! Here’s the dolphin that welcomed us back to Marathon in the Florida Keys this afternoon. I’ll post more soon, but I need to catch up on some sleep first! Great trip, lousy weather & we’re glad to be safely on a mooring ball in Marathon (read: totally weather protected harbor) for the…
