Apple Boatmeal With A Twist!

Two things on this bright sunny Friday morning … first I’m testing the new E-Mail posting plug-in we just added for WordPress called Postie.  Thanks to Tim at Mindcue for figuring this all out for me after I spent hours & hours not getting anywhere!  So far so good – if you’re seeing this, it worked!  I’ll be able to post from wherever we’re cruising … without internet access, via Winlink or SailMail.

And secondly enjoy a new twist on your boatmeal!  Yum!

Lots of cruisers have oatmeal frequently for breakfast, it’s compact to store, inexpensive and keeps forever. Recently I discovered a new twist on an old favorite.

Apple Juice! That’s right, apple juice. Substitute no sugar added apple juice for the water. I never measure, just put 1/3 – 1/2 cup of plain old regular oats, never quick oats, into a microwavable bowl. Pour the apple juice to generously cover the oats. I usually throw in a handful or raisins or even some chopped up apple bits. And then microwave for 2 minutes. If I’m anchored out and don’t want to use the microwave, I heat the apple juice just to boiling, then pour it over the oats in the boats, cover with a plate to keep the steam in and wait 5+ minutes, depending on how you like your oatmeal.

Before enjoying the treat, I generously add a sprinkle of cinnamon & YUM! I look forward to mornings, even without my coffee! Which is saying something for someone who used to be nicknamed “Mrs Coffee”! 🙂

  2. And it can be jazzed up with lots of different stuff — I steamed an apple this morning and added cinnamon apple chunks – yum! That was good too. I’m going to try your walnuts, berries & honey – although I may need to leave out the apple juice, it may be too sweet! I never had any idea there were so many ways to enjoy boatmeal!

  4. I steam everything — by that I mean adding a bit of water in the bottom of a pan, sprinkling with cinnamon and adding the apple chunks. All I’m doing is softening the apple chunks so they’re not crispy in the oatmeal, although that could be good too. 🙂

    Hmmm…I will have to try that too. We are currently downsizing and I am getting rid of everything that won’t go from house to boat and back again. In addition to that…we’re practicing storing techniques and learning foods that are cruise friendly. Thanks for giving me be things to try. 🙂
