Chris Parker Weather & Buoyweather.com

If we had to choose just one weather source to rely on, it would definitely be Chris Parker. Visit his website to see sample daily forecast e-mails, including crossing advice in the US East Coast & Bahamas version.  You can also listen to a sample SSB broadcast.

But since we can have more than one weather source, we have Chris’ e-mail forecasts, Buoyweather text spot weather forecasts, the NOAA offshore text forecast for our area and the NOAA 24, 48 & 72 hour wind/wave forecasts.   We also listen to any available VHF or SSB Nets with weather information.  We’ve told you how to get the other elements of our daily weather update, so this post completes our weather data.

Chris Parker Daily Weather

Chris takes all the raw data available and condenses it into a specific forecast for three different areas – US East Coast and Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean or Western Caribbean.  You can choose to listen and talk to Chris via the single sideband radio or get a daily e-mail with in depth weather information or even request vessel specific routing advice.  Chris now offers many different pricing packages to accommodate cruising styles, including commuter cruisers!  This 3 month cruise we will take advantage of Chris’ 3 month e-mail special for $95!  While we were cruising the Western Caribbean, we subscribed to both e-mail and SSB weather information.

The SSB nets are available to all, anyone can listen with no charge – where else can you get this level of weather information for no charge?  Of course, if you want to support Chris’ company insuring he’ll be around to help all of us for years to come, after you listen and decide that this weather is the best, please sign up for some type of weather data.

Directly from Chris Parker’s website, here’s his Weather Philosophy:

What I Do:

Marine Weather Center’s Chris Parker provides high-value-added forecasts geared specifically for small (typically 30’-65’, but some larger & smaller) sail & power vessels, with the information you need to support good tactical decision-making.  I provide these forecasts on an economical Annual, Monthly, or per-forecast basis, and by the communications method(s) you prefer, including SSB Voice, email, phone, or fax.  I also simulcast SSB Nets on an Internet Webcast.

My Forecast Philosophy:

Weather forecasters tend to be an opinionated, and some might say arrogant bunch – we like to be right.  I see technical forecast discussions time and time again which mention the possibility / plausibility for severe weather, but, since the forecaster’s objective is to be “right” (to produce a single forecast with the greatest chance of being correct) – they fail to warn forecast recipients of potentially-severe weather.

I have a different objective – I try to make sure you are not surprised by the weather – especially that you’re not surprised by inclement weather. Occasionally that means my forecasts for inclement weather fail to verify – but I’d much rather have it that way than to have clients surprised by nasty weather.

Of course, I can’t anticipate all inclement weather, and I encourage clients to use as many forecast sources as they wish. I encourage dialogue. You need to make weather-based decisions, so you need to understand the weather situation. If you do not understand, please ask. If my forecast differs from other forecasts, feel free to ask why.

Routing Advice:

In addition to weather forecasts, most of my services provide Routing Advice.  While I may suggest you consider sailing a specific route for most-favorable conditions, my Routing Advice goes way beyond that.

I try to consider unique needs of each client. I’ve worked with physically disabled sailors, vessels with young children onboard, engine-less vessels, serious racers, delivery crews, day-sailors, vessels on Atlantic Crossings, fishing vessels, tug boats, surfers, airplanes, etc.  Each client has different goals, and desires different “ideal” weather conditions.

Buoyweather.com

In addition to Chris Parker’s weather forecasts, we subscribe to Buoyweather’s spot e-mail forecasts which give us 7 days of text data in a format showing wind, wind direction every 6 hours and the corresponding wave height and wave period.  Daily we get a forecast spot forecast for wherever we specify.  We set these up ahead of time via the internet, but the FAQ tells you how to order up different spot forecasts via an e-mail request.    We get the Offshore Text forecasts because they work well with our Sailmail SSB e-mail.    Here’s a sample of what we get each morning.  The advantage of Buoyweather is that we can spot switching winds further out than other forecasts, thereby cluing us in to potential cold fronts coming, allowing advance planning of where we might want to be anchored.  You can get Buoyweather forecasts for free or you can spend the money to be a Premium Member.  We’re premium members, because we want the advance notice as far out as we can get it — I think the free version gives you 3 days, the premium version 7 days spot forecasts.  Note that there is a way to get spot forecasts via SailDocs with SailMail, but we find it easier to use Buoyweather, plus if you have internet connections, there’s a ton of information easily accessible on the website.
