The really cool thing is you can do this anywhere there is some water to sail your boat, regardless of your personal wealth, you just cut your cloth accordingly. Here in New Zealand we sail our yacht mostly around the beautiful Hauraki Gulf. Dozens of islands all very close within some of the world best crusing grounds. We see all types of yachts from visiting super yachts to small trailersailors. Ok, we don't have the crystal clear waters or colourful tropical fish of the more exotic places, but that's not all there is to criusing. Just do it, never let the weather define your day, sail safe and have fun..wherever you are.

I live on a beach in Costa Rica and have been off and on in the Central, South American and Caribbean regions since my first trip via motorcycle in 1963. I am in the market for an "afforadable" cruiser with the thought in mind of keeping the boat near Bocas del Toro as it is a short hop from home. I have more Tico friends than Gringo friends and unfortunately the thieves don't discriminate. They were here before the gringo and will be long after we may be gone. The locals tell me, have a couple good dogs, a big stick and hope for the best.. Be vigelant yet without fear... An old gringo looking for a boat....

Wow, what a timely post.
Just 2 weeks ago I returned from a day sail on Lake Pontchartrain and as six of us were visiting on the dock, a rat ran from the aft end of my boat to the foredeck. I ran to stomp it just as it jumped from the foredeck onto the dock and into some tall grass nearby. I never keep food on my boat as we are day sailors and my boat is by far the cleanest in the marina where we are docked. Since that time, I have researched every rat preventative known to man. I bought a device made by BirdX which emits a high pitched sound and is supposed to keep them away. This device is too annoying to have on unless you are not aboard the vessel. Also, after reading a bit about how rats and mice hate peppermint oil, I purchases 16 ounces of the oil for $65 and have put it all over the boat in every nook and cranny. I haven't sealed the boat off yet because I didn't want to trap any inside and have them die in the boat. The only place they can get in is from my vents from the engine compartment. I plan to take care of sealing it off this coming weekend.

Along with starting the cold plate up the day before shopping, I also scrape the cold plate daily with a firm spatula to keep the ice from building up. To assist with freezing, I leave channels of space between the stacks of food that I place in the freezer so that there is some air flow. Finally, I put "like" items like bagged veggies, chicken, fish, etc in colored (I dyed them) mesh. zippered laundry bags so that I can quickly grab a bag and shut the door, rather than search for an item, letting the cold air out. I do the same in the fridge for meats, cheese, and other small, "like" items.

I am the keeper of a database of all of the original Passports, including P37, P40, P41, P42, P43, and P47. I have actually just started work on the P37 part of the database. My email address is SheltieJim@xmission.com, and I own P40 hull #18, Dream SeQueL.

* Your name and contact information (address, phone, email; tell me if you want any or all of the information to be removed from the public versions of the database).
* The name of your boat
* The USCG Documentation number, if any
* The hailing port
* The full hull ID (e.g., my P40's ID is PYK400180682)
* Any additional information (e.g., previous names/owners, engine, configuration, places you've sailed her, etc.) you'd like included.
