Dang Birds!

The birds are a problem in our marina.  Normal size birds cause constant messes on deck, which is a nuisance.  But BIG birds like ospreys land on wind instruments rendering them broken.  The last time we left the dock on our ill-fated April month’s cruise, we noticed the ST-60 windicator display panel only indicated wind speed, not direction.  Looking up, we immediately spotted a missing vane on top of the masthead indicator.

Note the fin on top of the forward spinning windicator and the two red ended indicator bars on the back manual windicator?

Even though we have a spare ST60 masthead wind indicator, we decided not to give the ospreys the pleasure of landing on another one and breaking it while we’re gone.  So when we return this fall, we’ll have to climb the mast and install the replacement wind indicator … and hope another osprey doesn’t break it before we can leave and go cruising!

Now note the fin on top of the forward windicator is missing as is one of the red tipped alignment indicators on the back.

Always something! Osprey’s stay away!!!

Dang heavy ospreys ... break stuff!

Do you have any special ways to keep the osprey’s off the top of the mast, breaking stuff in the process?  Please leave a comment and share!  Cheers!  Jan

P.S.  This is a replacement post for one that was lost during a website software upgrade.
