I love seeing manatees swim around our boat. They aren’t as prevalent as they were in Charlotte Harbor but they’re still around and it still makes me smile to see the awkward, sometimes ugly sea cows. But PLEASE never ever ever do this! Manatees love to drink fresh water and boaters sometimes turn a fresh water hose into the water to watch them cavort. Yes, it’s entertaining. But it’s also illegal.
And these two manatees are cavorting directly in front of a fuel dock – after hours, but still in the busiest boat area — i.e. DANGER from spinning propellers. 🙁 Please don’t put them in more danger than they’re already in……
According to FWC (Florida Wildlife Conservation) … Do manatees need fresh water to survive?
It is unknown whether fresh water is essential for manatees’ survival, but they do like it. Manatees can be found in rivers and springs as well as congregating at fresh water drainage pipes. Some people attract manatees to their docks by letting them drink water from ordinary garden hoses. This is illegal and endangers the mammals because it brings them to areas of high boat traffic.
