Wolf Trap Lighthouse ... about 2/3 of the way from Norfolk to Deltaville.

Being underway every day leaves little time to write a “real” post for Commuter Cruiser!  There’s a Dismal Swamp Canal adventure post coming soon … but first I have to find time to write it!  Until then, here’s a sample of a typical day in the life of m/v Optimystique…. 55 miles, 7 hours … finally on Chesapeake Bay!  68 degrees & partly cloudy today.

Leaving Norfolk at 7:40 AM, we encountered a couple of ships – one coming in, one backing out … here’s the one coming in…

Passing an incoming ship on the way out of Norfolk – at the same time a ship abeam of us was backing out!  Luckily slowly via two tugs manipulating it with lines.

Then we passed all the active USS Navy ships … here’s the USS George HW Bush aircraft carrier, CVN 77, the tenth and final ship of the Nimitz Class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

The George HW Bush USS Aircraft Carrier … on our way out of Norfolk. SO cool!

Some sleek looking fighter jets aboard the two carriers – the USS Essex and the USS George HW Bush!

After negotiating all the ship traffic, ahead of us we saw the old Chamberlain Hotel on Fort Monroe.  Nostalgia for us … back in 2001, we stayed here the night before we first set eyes on our soon to be sailboat, s/v Winterlude.  See the masts to the left of the hotel? The old Fort Monroe Marina. Winterlude took us on many adventures, from Annapolis to Cartagena, Colombia, back to Florida, to the Exumas and finally to Cuba before we regrettably sold her in June 2016.

The old Chamberlain Hotel on Fort Monroe … look to the left – see the masts? That’s where we first saw our sailboat, Winterlude …back in 2001.

After which, thank goodness came several hours of BORING cruising up Chesapeake Bay.  BORING is the best way to experience big bodies of water such as the Chesapeake which can turn into raging maniacal waters if given half a chance.  Whew!    Passing Wolf Trap Lighthouse on the way to Deltaville, VA.

Ah yes, we remember not so fondly, weaving our way through the crab pot mazes so prevalent in the Chesapeake.  Solomons Island was worse … that’s tomorrow if the thunderstorms hold off or come tonight instead of in the morning….

Negotiating with crab pots became an important facet of our lives this afternoon just before Deltaville, VA.

Into Deltaville, Dozier’s Regatta Pointe Marina.  Wonderful to be welcomed so heartily!  Watching the coming cold front carefully – can we duck 64 miles to Solomon’s Island tomorrow in light air and calm seas.  We won’t make a final decision until the morning.  Living day to day by the weather.  🙂

Bradenton, FL to Deltaville, VA … over 1400 miles and counting…..

Hello Solomon’s Island (with permission of the thunderstorms, of course….)  Cheers — Jan
